Posted by Jesus Diaz at 11:40 AM on December 20, 2008

PopSci's Adam Weiner did some calculations to see if young Kirk could survive the car jump in the new Star Trek trailer. Adam's wrong. We have the real answer in our own video.

Buildings That Could Be Mistaken For Famous Spaceships

Posted by Sean Fallon at 11:20 AM on December 20, 2008

What happens when architects are also major sci-fi nerds? The massive gallery complied by io9 might give you an idea. It features buildings that resemble the Death Star, Enterprise and the Borg Cube. [io9]

Glad Joel posted this, because I almost missed it: Majel Barret joined her husband Gene Roddenberry Where Many People Have Gone Before. Maybe you think you don't know her, but you do.

Star Trek vs Star Wars: The Final Battle

Posted by Jesus Diaz at 6:00 AM on November 29, 2008

With the new Star Trek movie coming, the ongoing war between factions in the Giz bullpen is heating up, to the point in which not even cold turkey or Black Friday deals can stop it: On one side, with officially-licensed James T. Kirk & Spock Love briefs, Jason Chen. On the other, me* in my Darth Vader glow-in-the-dark underpants. And on the third side of this sci-fi menage a trois, the rest of the crew laughing at us. Then, in the middle, the Old Question that has pitted friend against friend, brother versus brother in bloody nerd combat for decades: Who would win in battle, a 642.5--meter long Galaxy-class Federation starship or a 1,600-metre long Executor-class Imperial Star Destroyer? This newly-released video gives a definitive answer, once and forever. Or does it? Watch it and let another ferocious geek battle begin in the comments. [Thanks Jim]

Catching Up: Star Trek Preview Impressions From a Casual Fan

Posted by Brian Lam at 9:58 AM on November 21, 2008

Jason, I was in LA for a bit yesterday, helping Jalopnik cover the LA autoshow with my long lens. (It was a boring show with nothing too interesting other than the Electric Mini and Honda Concept.) But it was coincidentally the same day JJ Abrams was showing off some scenes from the new Trek movie, so I stopped by. This is funny: When they asked me if I had any recording gear in my bag, I had a heart attack. Most people had a mere mobile phone, but I had my full journo-blogger-battle messenger and so I ended up checking like 4 pieces of AV gear and a laptop. So embarrassing.

Star Trek Plate Covers Won't Make Your Lights Turn On Any Faster

Posted by Jesus Diaz at 11:45 PM on November 12, 2008

You can't wait for the movie. You have the t-shirts, the tricorder replica, the klingon doctorate, your room looks like the Enterprise's bridge, your face has morphed already into a sexy Vulcanian, and you have been writing your first Star Trek novel for years now. But do you have these plates for your electrical wall thingies? Yeah. That's what I thought. Go get the three of them for only $US18. My favourite by far is the power plug plate:

First Look At the New USS Enterprise

Posted by Jason Chen at 10:00 AM on November 12, 2008

Entertainment Weekly's got an exclusive first picture of the new Enterprise, also known as the old Enterprise, also known as Kirk's Enterprise. It looks quite Enterprisey—a sort of mashup between the old sensibilities of TOS, the more advanced special effects of the USS Enterprise E (Picard's latest ship) and Scott Bakula's lousy junker. Looking at it again, those fat nacelles make it seem more like a cross between the Enterprise A and the Enterprise B. In any case, a high five to JJ Abrams and his effects crew for making a ship we're looking forward to seeing go "pew pew pew" next year. [EW]

Star Trek Tribble Replica Wriggles and Coos, Won't Over-Run Your Home

Posted by Kit Eaton at 8:12 PM on November 7, 2008

A six-inch furry toy that vibrates and makes the genuine cooing sounds of the Tribbles from Star Trek... probably something to not buy if you've got predatory cats around the place. You never know though, since these electronic replicas have a "Klingon mode" where they get truly battle-agitated, and that might put the wind up Ginger. Due for shipping in early 2009, they'll cost around $US28 and luckily have no in-built self-replication mode. [Product via OhGizmo]

Scientists Claiming Planet Vulcan May Exist Don't Have Pointy Ears

Posted by Jesus Diaz at 10:54 PM on October 29, 2008

Using data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, Dr Massimo Marengo--from the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics--and Dr Dana Backman--from the SETI Institute--are claiming that there's a solar system which is a younger twin of our own, just 10.5 light-years from us. Nothing surprising, really, until they tell you that the star is called Epsilon Eridani. Which just happens to be, hold your tinfoil hats on, the legendary home star of a certain Mr. Spock. According to Marengo, they have a pretty good idea of how it looks like:
