Remember that new Labyrinth board game from a few weeks ago? Had absolutely no idea how it would play? Join the club. Well, join it temporarily, because once you’ve watched this video, you’ll be officially kicked out.
Tabletop gaming channel TheBeastsOfWar managed to convince the designer, Alessio Cavatore from Riverhorse, to let them have a crack at the game.
The first thing you’ll learn is that Labyrinth supports up to five players. It’s meant to be played with four, but a special mode is included where one person can take on the role of Jareth the Goblin King.
The game consists of moving around the titular structure, drawing from a deck of encounter cards as you go. The card that represents the entrance to the Goblin City is shuffled into the deck as one of the last 10 cards, so you’ll want to get through those cards as quickly as possible if you want to win.
To keep things simple in terms of rolling dice, character skills — including movement — are represented by different coloured and sided dice. For example, Hoggle rolls a black ten-sided die for his “Wits”, though other characters might roll something smaller — the yellow eight-sided die, for instance.
I have to say, I’m liking what I see. Complex enough to be interesting, but not so much to put off the average person.
