Years after the original Broadway run of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton was filmed, it will finally be coming to screens. In a move that has shocked approximately no one, Disney has laid down a large chunk of cash for the rights.
But you’ll have to wait for it.
The media giant has shelled out $US75 million (around $112 million) for worldwide writes to the musical. According to Deadline, it will have a theatrical run before coming exclusively to Disney+.
The Walt Disney Studios Twitter account made the announcement on Tuesday, stating that Hamilton will hit the big screen on October 15 in the U.S. It’s likely that it will then come to the streaming service in 2022.
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Into The Heights will also be hitting cinemas this year. All Lin all the time.

Hamilton was filmed back 2016, mere weeks before the original cast (including Miranda) left the production. Since then various media companies, including Netflix, have been bidding for the broadcast rights.
And it’s about time. Considering most punters need to travel to the U.S. or London to see the show – and often enter a lottery for the right to buy expensive tickets – it finally feels like Hamilton is being democratised. $8.99 for a monthly subscription is far more affordable than what ticket prices are likely to be once the show hits Sydney in March.
Gizmodo Australia has reached out to Disney+ locally to determine if and when we will get the in cinemas and on Disney+ in Australia.
