You can’t hear sound in space. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t make sound from space. Lefse Records recently did just that, inviting 14 artists to make songs using “sounds” from space. The first track released is by Youth Lagoon, and it’s pretty good!
Again, these sounds aren’t like what you hear when you clap your hands. They’re actually “electromagnetic radiation fluctuations in the magnetosphere of the planets, moons and large asteroids the Voyager probes traveled near,” the label explains. It’s not the first time somebody’s had this idea, either. Various types of space sound projects have been around since at least the 1990s, and you’d be surprised by the results.
Youth Lagoon’s “Worms” is out now. More tracks are coming from Spiritualized, Beach House, The Antlers, Mutual Benefit, Blues Control and others. The entire album, The Space Project, will be out April 19.
