If you’re into B-movies, you’re going to have a great night in at the end of July. The sequel to Sharknado — and yes, it’s called Sharknado 2: The Second One — will air in Australia within minutes of its American release.
Foxtel tells us that Sharknado 2: The Second One will air on the local SyFy channel on July 31st at 11:30AM, and an encore screening is scheduled for 9:30PM that night. This is just a matter of minutes behind the US air-date of July 30th at 9:00PM Central time — so there’s no reason for anyone in Australia to pirate the movie. Good job, Foxtel!
This kind of international broadcast event is a great thing — it brings Australian viewers in line with everyone else across the world, letting them watch a movie premiere as it actually premieres. The only possible complaint is that it’s in the middle of the morning — but if that’s all you have to worry about, then you’re doing pretty well already.
Sharknado was a cult hit, but attracted pirates who wanted to view it while it was fresh and topical, prompting studio execs to fast-track the film to Australian channels (albeit a fortnight late).
If you want a bit of a primer for the new movie, since the plot really matters, here’s the synopsis:
In Sharknado 2: The Second One, a freak weather system turns its deadly fury on New York City, unleashing a Sharknado on the population and its most cherished, iconic sites –- and only Fin and April can save the Big Apple.
Shaaaaaaaaaaarks.
