In the ‘interesting new technology’ stakes, new PC monitors normally rank just above updated versions of power strips. But when a monitor includes a built-in Qi wireless charging pad? Now we’re talking.
Samsung’s latest monitor, the catchily-named SE370, is a pretty run-of-the-mill desktop monitor: 24-inch or 27-inch, with a 1080p PLS panel — not exactly exciting specs. But it’s what’s happening under the panel that is interesting: the base of the monitor stand is a well-hidden Qi wireless charging station.
Given that’s where I normally stash my phone when I’m at my computer, this makes a lot of sense. Rather than needing a separate wireless charging dock with its own special cable, it’s integrated into something that’s already taking up desk space. A green light on the front shows that charging has started.
The SE370 is expected sometime later this year. Those basic screen specs give me hope that the price will be reasonable — otherwise, you’re probably still better off getting that IKEA wirelessly charging lamp.
Update: And here’s an official statement from Samsung Australia on the SE370:
Samsung Electronics Australia is excited to confirm that the Samsung SE370 wireless mobile charging monitor will be made available in Australia later this year to offer users an optimal viewing and usability experience. We will provide pricing and availability details for this innovative monitor closer to the local launch.
