Video: The US$199 Myo is an armband with a host of internal pressure sensors, gyroscopes and accelerometers that lets users control PCs and Macs with gestures. A slightly more effective and practical real-world use, though, has been unveiled: Researchers at Johns Hopkins University are using a Myo to control a robotic prosthetic arm.
In the video the above-the-elbow amputee in Johns Hopkins’ test group, Johnny Matheny, uses a combination of two Myo bands on his lower and upper bicep to control an entirely robotic prosthetic, with points of articulation at the elbow, wrist, and all three knuckles on each finger.
