They are Godzilla: King of Monsters and Pacific Rim: Uprising, respectively. But while Pacific Rim: I Bet They will Change This Again‘s new title is a bit boring, there’s some delightful backstory to Godzilla 2‘s.
The two new titles were revealed today in a press release from Legendary covering the announcement of three new executives for its film division. Uprising is actually the third different name we’ve heard for Steven S. DeKnight’s follow up to Guillermo Del Toro’s Kaijutastic monster movie, after Pacific Rim 2 and Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, but Godzilla 2‘s new name is the first official word we’ve had on a title for the sequel.
It has a brilliant throwback to it, to boot — King of the Monsters was the subtitle given to the American release of the original 1954 Godzilla movie, first shown in 1956 with extra footage featuring Raymond Burr in the lead role for American audiences. It’s got a great ring to it too, aside from the shout out.
Godzilla: King of Monsters is due for US release 22 March 2019, while Pacific Rim: Uprising is currently set for a 23 February 2018 US debut.
