Talk of a sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse has been rampant as of late. There have been rumours of titles, shooting dates and actors returning. But one thing there hasn’t been is an answer to the question of who might write and direct the expected X-sequel. Now that name may finally be revealed.

That name is Simon Kinberg, who has co-written and produced the last three X-Men films, as well as produced Fantastic Four, Deadpool, Logan — basically everything in the franchise since X-Men: First Class. Collider reports that Kinberg, who has never directed a feature film, is in talks to direct the next X-sequel from a script he’s already written. And yes, that script would be the telling of the Dark Phoenix saga, which has been teased numerous times in the franchise.
We’ve reached out to Kinberg’s representatives and Fox for comment, but had yet to hear back at time of writing.
What we do know is that Sophie Turner, who played Jean Grey in Apocalypse, has said she expects to be filming a new X-Men film this year. James McAvoy, who plays the young Charles Xavier, also posted the following on his Instagram in the last day, with the quote, “I can’t wait for the summer.”
That, of course, is Kinberg with McAvoy as well as Patrick Stewart. You could easily assume these were X-Men meetings and that the summer (winter in Australia) would be when filming would start. But that would just be an educated guess.
This is an ongoing story which we will keep you updated on. But, as of now, it seems likely that Kinberg will be graduating from writer-producer to writer-director — and will helm a new X-Men movie about the Dark Phoenix saga sometime later this year.
