First Love Awakens A Young Woman’s Supernatural Powers In The Eerie Thelma Trailer

Video: In Thelma, a sheltered, small-town girl discovers a whole new world when she arrives in Oslo for university. Some things about it are awesome, like her budding relationship with fellow student Anja — but some are awful, like the sudden emergence of her uncontrollable supernatural powers. (And yeah, they’re probably connected.)

As this new trailer shows, Thelma’s religious parents seem to have some idea about what’s going on, even if Thelma and her doctors — who diagnose her with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures, “an affliction that once got women misidentified as witches,” according to Thelma‘s official summary — have no real clue. What’s her family hiding, and what’s really the matter with Thelma? And what’s up with all those snakes?

Thelma is the latest film from acclaimed Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier (Oslo, August 31st; Louder Than Bombs) and it’s already slated to be Norway’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars. It will play several festivals, including the Adelaide Film Festival for its Australian premiere on October 9.
