“That meme is dead, Mum.”
It was the moment I realised I really was profoundly uncool, expertly owned by my 16 year old son. I was using a meme that was tired, apparently. Overused. About to become the territory of that Aunt who posts Minions memes on Facebook. It was dead.
But how long do memes live for anyway, and which ones endure the test of time?
The good people at Yellow Octopus did a deep dive into Google Trends to find the answer to this burning, and very important, question.
Videos have the shortest life of all viral content (you’ll probably only watch it once then share it), followed by products (still using your fidget spinner?), then apps (unless there is incentive to go back), and finally – memes.
Memes are so useful for our constant online communications, you see. All day, every day.
And the king of all memes? Pedobear.
It’s Pedobear’s oft-misunderstood purpose that has helped him endure the test of time. Happy 72 months, Pedobear. May your ridiculousness endure long after we’ve forgotten what you’re all about.
