Three years ago, two sets of NYC-based heroes met up to defeat a supernatural menace in an IDW comic miniseries. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Ghostbusters are doing it again this November, with some very… interesting action figures to match.
“Four heroes with a rowdy mix of personalities, fighting off weird threats to New York City” could describe either the Ghostbusters or the Ninja Turtles, which is why the two matched up so well in the first comic. Spearheaded by IDW editorial talents Tom Waltz and Erik Burnham, the new miniseries will be a five-week event in November, with a new issue out each week.
Representatives from toy company Playmates were also on hand to reveal a new range of figures that will also be available this fall. Each figure mashes up a Turtle with a ‘Buster and translucent ghosts will be packed in as well. They are… quite something, although Raphael/Zeddemore’s mustache is pretty amazing We’ll add more info and images as we get them.
Ghostbusters creator/director Ivan Reitman was also at the panel and offered up some interesting answers during an audience Q&A. When asked about how the importance of China in the global film market, Reitman said that none of the Ghostbusters movies have ever been shown theatrically in China, because as the questioner asserted, talking about ghosts flies against cultural norms there. He then added that the creators working on future Ghostbusters projects are trying to re-contextualize what a ghost is in the franchise’s fiction, to try to get into the Chinese film market. Reitman also asked if he’d ever consider digitally resurrecting characters, as with Peter Cushing and Grand Moff Tarkin in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. “It’s possible. It’s something we’re thinking of,” he answered.
