There’s never a good time to buy a TV. If it’s not plasma, it’s LCD. And when it’s not LCD, it’s LCDs with 3D. If LG gets its way, the next display tech you’ll be groaning about is OLED, with the manufacturer planning to demo a 55-inch screen at CES next year.
According to LG’s press release, it’s the largest OLED TV panel ever made, and offers a contrast ratio of 100,000:1. We should also expect richer colours and minimal to no ghosting, thanks to a reaction velocity “1000 times faster than liquid crystal”.
The panel uses “oxide TFT technology” as opposed to “low temperature poly silicon” (LTPS) that’s found in current OLED displays. LG says oxide TFT, compared to LTPS, provides the same image quality at a lower price point.
We’ll be better able to judge these specs once the display is revealed to journos in January. What we can probably count on is a thinner bezel and back (as you can see in the image above) and lower power consumption, as OLEDs don’t make use of back lights.
