With all the competition in the Android tablet space, we’re seeing more Wi-Fi only models — the Asus Transformer Prime comes immediately to mind. Tablet makers argue it helps keep costs down and it’s easy to tether from our smartphones, but it’s always nice to have the option. So I’m glad to see Sony bringing the 3G version of its 9.4-inch Tablet S slate to Australia, alongside a single 3G version of the folding, twin 5.5-inch screen Tablet P. Both hit stores mid-next week.
The 16GB Sony Tablet S 3G will be $649, compared to $499 for the non-3G 16GB model. That’s not quite the $100 price drop the US got, but does mean the special price Sony offered over Christmas has become permanent.
As for the new Tablet P: a single model combining 3G and Wi-Fi will come to Australia mid-Feb. Here’s the updated pricing for Sony’s tablet line-up:
Both tablets have a 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, Wi-Fi, and are PlayStation certified. Each also includes an SD card slot, front and rear cameras (5-megapixel on the back) and are confirmed to be upgradable to Android 4.x Ice Cream Sandwich. The S has a 9.4-inch touchscreen (1280×768), while the P has dual 5.5-inch touchscreen.
