In what has to be one of the biggest Indian giver moves ever, Danish state-run lottery company Danske Spil notified 300 people via email that they just won billions in the lottery… only they really didn’t. They were only notified because of a glitch in the system, meaning for half an hour 300 people thought their lives had changed forever.
Can you imagine? People were probably already dreaming what they would buy, who they would woo and when they would quit their jobs. The false excitement of a fake win is cruel! Can you imagine if someone said you could have an ice cream cone on a hot summer day and then changed their mind and splattered the ice cream all over the sidewalk? It’s like that but a BILLION times worse.
This is what the Danish lottery told the AFP:
“Three hundred of our lottery players who won the lottery, the Keno, received a message saying they had won a sum in the billions. And they never won that amount… We are of course very sorry. We have now written to them to inform them of the sum that they really won”
The wrong winnings notification ranged from $US178 million to $US50 billion (converted from 1 billion – 280 billion Danish Crowns). In reality, the 300 people did win money but it was only $US35-$70, good enough to buy a couple beers to drown their sorrows or more lottery tickets to win fake billions. [Skynews]
