In Southwestern France, a group of European catfish — which can get between one metre and 1.5 metres long — have taught themselves the art of fowl hunting to satisfy their discerning palettes.
As unsuspecting pigeons often wander towards the shore, the fish have learned how to lunge out of the water, capture a bird and shimmy back into the water to dine in peace.
A local fisherman spent part of 2011 observing these freshwater killers, filming a total of 54 attacks with a meagre 28 per cent success rate. Fortunately for France’s pigeons, looks like catfish are slow learners. [Discover]
