Apple has long held ambitions to use liquid metal in its devices, having bought exclusive rights to Liquidmetal Technologies’ metal alloys for use in consumer electronics way back in 2010. Now, it has renewed those rights.
The initial purchase happened in September 2010 but only ran until February of this year. Now, Apple has extended the agreement to run until February 2015.
While we’re yet to see any evidence of Apple actually using Liquidmetal on a grand scale, rumour continue to swirl about how it could be used for home buttons, touch sensors and tamper-resistant screws. Given its high strength and corrosion resistance teamed with light weight and ease of casting, it’s certainly an impressive material. Maybe in the next iPhone? [SEC via MacRumors]
