Samsung’s much anticipated virtual reality headset for use with the Galaxy Note 4 is finally coming. The Gear VR Innovator Edition will be available in early December.
The Gear VR is a partnership with Oculus was first announced a few months ago, and on first glance it was actually really compelling. Turning your phone into a headset could really work! Unfortunately, we didn’t have any concrete details about when we might get our hands on the headset.
Along with the launch, the company will make the Oculus SDK for Gear VR available, in addition to a couple of canned starter apps for people who want to see what it’s all about. And actually some of the stuff sounds pretty fun, including Temple Run VR.
Additionally, once you have a Gear VR, your Note 4 will magically get access to a number of apps you’ll need to use your giant phone as a display for virtual reality. These include, from the release:
- Oculus Home — Your VR home screen and content discovery center, which includes a Samsung section
- Oculus Store — An application that lets you browse and download new content from the Oculus platform
- Oculus Cinema — A VR movie theatre and cinema where you can watch your favourite movies in an immersive virtual environment
- Oculus 360 Videos and Photos — Be immersed in 360° videos and panoramas like never before from within Gear VR
