We’re just a month away from the release of Windows 10, and to celebrate this momentous occasion for desktop software, Microsoft has released a video showing the ‘hero image’ that will grace your desktop backgrounds for years to come. I kind of hate it already.
Microsoft went to great pains — a two-minute behind-the-scenes YouTube video — to explain how it created one still, using techniques like laser projections, camera mapping and lens flares. They describe the image (which will, thankfully, not be an animated GIF) as being “like a portal that’s allowing us to look into space”. That sounds like a whole lot of effort for an image that everyone is going to look and once, and then change immediately.
Of course, Microsoft’s crack team of designers could’ve just saved themselves the work, and used this (basically identical) image instead.
