Nothing quite captures the pinnacle of human accomplishment like spacewalks — it takes a unique combination of political ambition and technical knowhow to allow mankind to wander around the atmosphere. To celebrate 50 years of humans playing in the vacuum of space, NASA has released a documentary about the history of the spacewalk.
‘Suit Up’ starts with the first human EVAs, conducted by Russian cosmonaut Alexey Leonov in March 1965, and NASA astronaut Edward White in June of the same year. From there, it goes on to examine the development of the spacewalk, including a remarkable look at the behind-the-scenes work that goes into a spacewalk — from the equipment programme, right up to the hundreds of people in Mission Control working to make sure each EVA goes to plan.
