The cabin of a Jetstar Airbus A320 filled with smoke 45 minutues into a flight from Sydney to Cairns yesterday, ending with an unscheduled landing in Brisbane.
The ABC reports engineers are investigating a “technical issue” which caused the pilot to shut down an engine.
After a four hour stopover, passengers were put on another flight. No one was injured.
A Jetstar spokesperson told ABC the captain decided to shut down one of the engines as a precaution and confirmed the smoke would have entered the cabin through the air conditioning unit — which runs via air from the engines.
The spokesperson said while it’s rare for something like this to happen, Jetstar’s crew are trained to deal with these type of situations and they handled the situation “very professionally”.
