Video: RC planes aren’t cheap, and crashing even a $250 model can be heartbreaking given how much work is required to build and test it before your first flight. So imagine how these guys feel when their half-scale Saab Gripen, measuring 8m long and weighing over 100kg, simply disintegrated in mid-air.
Unfortunately there’s no one to blame for this catastrophe but those responsible for its construction and the pilot at the controls. The jet engines worked fine, there were no mid-air collisions, but apparently the stress of flying was enough to weaken its airframe to the point where the tail broke off, causing the craft to suddenly nose up and then boom.
