When we hear the phrase “science fiction”, most of the time, we focus on the second word. That’s the fun part, right? The stuff that’s impossible? Well, a new art show is flipping that on its head.
It’s called Super Science Fair: A Pop Culture Experiment by artists Dave Perillo and Tom Whalen, and it opens Friday, November 3 at Spoke Art in San Francisco, CA.
The artists have taken several of their favourite pop culture properties and reimagined them as if their subjects were part of a science fair. As a result, each piece looks like a really high-end, information-packed school project, but in a very cool way.
First up, an exclusive reveal of one of Whalen’s pieces.
That’s called Sulaco Spec Sheet. Inspired by Aliens, it measures 36 x 30cm in an edition of 60.
And here are several posters that have previously been revealed. The first three are by Perillo.
And the next three are all by Whalen.
Can you guess all the inspirations? You probably can but, just to be safe, it’s ET: The Extra-Terrestrial, an array of sci-fi planets, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and 2001: A Space Odyssey.
The show opens November 3 from 6:00-10:00PM at 816 Sutter St in San Francisco. It remains on display through November 26. For more information, go here.
