Star Wars: Episode VIII Is Now Star Wars: The Last Jedi

The next chapter of the Star Wars saga finally has a name, and it’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The title was announced through this morning. And before you forget, Jedi is plural and singular, so don’t get too worried about the fate of Rey or Luke from the name alone.

It’s a suitably ominous title for the middle chapter of the new saga, but what could it mean? Obviously, despite the fact that Jedi can be a plural as well as a singular noun, many are going to see it as signs of an ominous fate for Luke Skywalker — passing down the Jedi teachings to Rey before meeting his own fate (or, shock twist that will never happen: Rey dies, leaving Luke as the titular final Jedi).

Likewise, it could refer to the both of them, as they’re seemingly all that’s left standing from the ruins of Luke’s ill-fated attempt to resurrect the Jedi Order before the events of The Force Awakens. We’ve even heard rumours recently about Rey’s training under Luke, and this could be a nod to her not really being a Jedi yet, as she takes her first step into a larger world.

But really, we don’t know all that much yet. We do however know that The Last Jedi is a pretty damn cool title.

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, and produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Ram Bergman, J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin and Tom Karnowski, Star Wars: The Last Jedi will hit theatres 15 December 2017.
