The onslaught of TV reboots and revivals continues – well, in theory anyway. At a recent conference, Fox TV’s group chair revealed there have been discussions of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival in the future, but they know there’s one thing on this Earth more powerful than that kind of evil. And that’s Buffy fans.

Speaking at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem, Fox TV’s Gary Newman was chatting about the wave of rehashed nostalgia on television. Fox is a major player in the reboot game, having recently brought The X-Files, 24 and Prison Break back from the dead. When discussing what series Fox would want to do next, Newman may have driven a stake into every Buffy fan’s heart with this definitely, totally, not at all a bad idea phrase.
“I think if you look in our library, Buffy is probably the most ripe show we have for bringing back,” Newman said, according to Variety. But, Newman added, there would need to be “a passionate fan base” eager to see the series return, and he acknowledged that he “wouldn’t get out of the building alive” (emphasis ours) if Fox actually announced a Buffy reboot. Sounds about right.
However, it isn’t up to fans. Newman continued, saying this sort of idea would entirely depend on original creator Joss Whedon. Newman said that most of their reboots and revivals happen after the show creator comes to them with “another story” to tell, and emphasised that they would only want to do it if Whedon wanted to. Now that he’s quit the Batgirl movie and is back to working on Buffy comics, he could just be in the right mindset. Who knows?
“It’s something we talk about frequently, and Joss Whedon is really one of the greatest creators we ever worked with,” he said. “When Joss decides it’s time, we’ll do it. And until Joss decides it’s time, it won’t happen.”
If the apocalypse comes, well, you know what to do.
