Dirty John was one of the biggest podcast hits of 2018. As is tradition with the most popular podcasts on the internet, it falls into the true crime category.
The six-part series is now being turned into a TV show starring Connie Britton and Erica Bana. A new teaser for it just dropped, and it’s making my skin crawl.
In case you haven’t listened to the podcast, I won’t spoil it for you. But it does revolve around abusive and intensley manipulative relationship between a con man by the name of John Meehan and a Californian business woman named Debra Newell who met on an internet dating site.
I listened to the entire thing in one go, and that may have been a mistake. Don’t get me wrong, it was great… but it sure as hell made some trust issues flair up. My suggestion — pace yourself on it.
Now, onto the trailer.
The teaser offers up Bana doing a piece-to-camera on what could be perceived as set, which makes sense if you know the story. He talks to an unknown person about his feelings for them… or at least it seems he is.
I could go on, but you really should just watch. It’s brilliantly minimalist, and I’m still creeped out by it.
