Overnight Amazon announced the third generation of its Echo Show devices, the Echo Show 5.
A bit of a confusing title? Sure. But it’s named for its 5.5-inch screen, making it the most compact variation of the gadget yes. Also the cheapest.
There’s not a lot here to differentiate the latest Show from its older siblings. It comes with a HD camera, built in camera shutter and can show you things in every room via Alexa.
It also has the same new smart home dashboard to control your connected devices, thousands of screen-based skills, customisable morning and evening routines and new privacy features.
The new privacy hub will also make it easier to access your privacy controls and understand what you can do to control what your device does.
Soon, you will also be able to ask Alexa to delete what you just said, or everything you’ve uttered during the day.
These are all great features, but not unique to the Echo Show 5. If you have a previous gen device, you’ll have access to all the same software and hardware.
What makes the latest device attractive is the size and price point. It’s half the size of the second gen Show, and a couple of inches smaller than the first gen. And at $129, it’s a better buy if you are after something on the compact side.
The Echo Show 5 is available for pre-order in Australia from today and will ship next month.
