Michigan resident Richard Leon Barton Jr was married last July. Which is wonderful! Except that he was already married to a woman back in Rhode Island, and had been since 2004. He would’ve gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for that meddling Facebook.
Barton was arrested yesterday and charged with polygamy, a felony that carries up to a four-year sentence. But how was he caught? All it took was some shoddy privacy setting management:
His first wife called Michigan police after Barton Jr. “defriended” her on Facebook and she eventually discovered wedding photos of him and his new wife on other people’s Facebook pages.
I think the moral of the story is pretty clear here: If you’re going to have two families, you should probably have two Facebook accounts. [Mlive via ZDNet]
