It sounds too crazy to be real, but it’s actually coming true. The crossover between 21 Jump Street and Men in Black, which was first revealed by the Sony hack in 2014, is now going forward as a possible film. And they found a perfect director.
When this possible crossover was first leaked a couple years ago, lots of people freaked out — but Sony still decided to get Rodney Rothman to write a screenplay for the series. And they liked what they read enough to move ahead. Now James Bobin, who directed 2011’s The Muppets as well as episodes of Flight of the Conchords and Da Ali G Show, is lined up to direct. The movie isn’t 100 per cent greenlit, but production could actually start in June.
Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are both on board to return, and will also produce. But neither Will Smith nor Tommy Lee Jones is coming back for Men in Black — and in fact, recasting those roles with younger actors could allow Sony to relaunch this series.
If this crossover is successful, just imagine what we could get next. Jurassic Rim? Ghostbuster Activity? We are in.
Thanks to Cheryl for the crossover suggestions! [Variety]
