Every year, Audio-Technica releases a limited edition pair of its world-famous M50x headphones. In previous years the M50 line has been blue, black, white, matte grey… and this year, they look like Iron Man.
In the PC gaming world, everyone knows someone who owns a pair of M50s. They’re Audio-Technica’s most popular over-ear headphone by miles, and there’s a good reason why: they’re very comfortable and have excellent sound quality over a wide frequency range, hitting impressively low bass notes and adequately high highs. There are more expensive and aurally impressive M70x headphones out there, but the M50x hit that sweet spot.
While the last ATH-M50xMG variant was a subdued matte grey, this year is all about that gorgeous lustrous satin red, with gold accents on the earcups and folding hinges, as well as gold silkscreening on the black leatherette headband. There’s a leatherette soft carry case and 1/4-inch adapter in the box, too, as well as three cables — one 1.2-metre straight, one 3-metre straight and one 1.2- to 3-metre coiled.
Audio-Technica has pegged the 2017 limited edition ATH-M50xRD‘s price tag at $279. The M50x usually costs around the $200 point once it’s in the hands of retailers, so that price for the RD limited edition might drop just a bit — if they don’t just sell out straight away. Replacement pads for Audio-Technica’s M-series headphones are available for around the $40 mark, by the way. [Audio-Technica]
