The BBC’s Day Of The Triffids Foretold Of The Tide-Eating Craze In 1981

Have you ever seen the 1981 BBC miniseries version of The Day of the Triffids? My wife was recently rewatching the classic scifi tale and she saw something that she’d never noticed before: Someone eating Tide laundry detergent. Or at least trying to eat it.

The brief shot happens in the second episode of the six-part series after some Londoners have been blinded by watching a meteor shower. They’re scrambling to find food and a woman on the street has found a package of Tide in a ransacked grocery store. She’s clawing at the box to eat what’s inside.

I’ve uploaded a short clip of that scene to YouTube:

OK, it’s not exactly the Tide Pod Challenge. But it’s pretty amusing nonetheless given the recent trolly meme. Well, horrifying and amusing, just like the actual consumption of Tide Pods. Needless to say, you shouldn’t be eating Tide Pods. You can die.

Does anyone remember watching this scene before the 2016 presidential election? Was the Tide scene there? I’m not saying that we’re living in a dark and evil simulation that keeps glitching out, like by inserting new memes into old media. But I’m not not saying that either.
