When Marvel Studios has news, it usually doesn’t just have one bit to offer. It likes to overwhelm you with an avalanche of stuff, making it difficult to process it all. For Phase 3, it did a huge event at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, CA. For Phase 4, it was in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con. Today, for Disney+ Day, it was a giant Twitter thread plus a streaming special revealing info both new and old about everything Marvel has coming to Disney+.
It was truly a tidal wave of info, and here you can see all the shiny and new official logos. We got a bit more on series we knew were coming like Moon Knight and She-Hulk, and confirmation of shows that were rumoured to be coming like Echo and Agatha Harkness’ WandaVision spinoff, plus a couple of brand new ones like Spider-Man: Freshman Year. Let’s take a look!
Echo
This new series, previously rumoured, will star actress Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez, a character we’ll see introduced in Hawkeye. In the comics, she’s a deaf character and the adopted daughter of Kingpin.
Spider-Man Freshman Year
This is a brand new animated series, written by Jeff Trammel, described as following “Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the MCU, with a journey unlike we’ve ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots.” Will Tom Holland provide the voice? We hope so.
Agatha: House of Harkness
We knew about this one all along, as the song says. The previously rumoured show will star Kathryn Hahn as her fan-favourite character from WandaVision and has Jac Schaeffer as executive producer and head writer.
Moon Knight
To be fair this logo was previously seen. But Disney+ did release a Marvel special with the first footage from Moon Knight (read more about that here) starring Oscar Isaac, and a new official description: “Get a first look at Moon Knight, a new globetrotting action-adventure series featuring a complex vigilante who suffers from dissociative identity disorder. The multiple identities who live inside him find themselves thrust into a deadly war of the gods against the backdrop of modern and ancient Egypt. Moon Knight is directed by executive producer Mohamed Diab; Jeremy Slater is head writer. The series is coming to Disney+ in 2022.”
She-Hulk
This is a new logo for the previously announced show which, like Moon Knight, revealed its first footage on Disney+ today. Read more on that here and here’s a new official description: “See Tatiana Maslany as She-Hulk/Jennifer Walters, a lawyer who specialises in superhuman-oriented legal cases. She-Hulk will welcome a host of Marvel characters to the series, including the Hulk, played by Mark Ruffalo, and the Abomination, played by Tim Roth. The new comedy series coming to Disney+ in 2022 is directed by executive producer Kat Coiro with Anu Valia also directing. Executive producer Jessica Gao serves as head writer.”
Ms. Marvel
Kamala Khan is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe this summer. That news broke as part of Disney+ Day, along with our first glimpse at footage (described here). Here’s what Disney wants you to know: “Ms. Marvel introduces Kamala Khan — a 16-year-old Pakistani American from Jersey City. An aspiring artist, an avid gamer and a voracious fan-fiction scribe, she is a huge fan of the Avengers — and one in particular, Captain Marvel. But Kamala has always struggled to find her place in the world — that is, until she gets super powers like the heroes she’s always looked up to. Iman Vellani stars as Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel. The series is directed by executive producers Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah, Meera Menon and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, with executive producer Bisha K. Ali serving as head writer. Ms. Marvel premieres on Disney+ in summer 2022.”
What If…? Season 2
io9 had previously been told the Disney+ animated Marvel series was getting a season two, but here’s another confirmation. What could possibly happen next? Anything really, which is what makes it so fun. But the Watcher will return at some point with an all-new season of What If. Episodes are directed by executive producer Bryan Andrews with another executive producer, AC Bradley, leading the writing team.
Secret Invasion
Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn reprise their roles in this follow-up to both Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far From Home detailing how the Skrulls have been invading Earth for years.
Ironheart
With Tony Stark gone, the MCU needs a new super-genius inventor. Enter Riri Williams (played by Dominique Thorne), who’ll create a brand new, ultra-advanced Iron suit.
I Am Groot
This new animated series features short films of Baby Groot, a character first seen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, getting into trouble. The show is being run by executive producer Kirsten Lepore.
Marvel Zombies
Some of the breakout stars of What If were the Marvel characters as zombies. Well, this show is loosely inspired by that and is described as “an animated series from Marvel Studios that reimagines the Marvel Universe as a new generation of heroes battle against an ever-spreading zombie scourge. Directed by executive producer Bryan Andrews.”
X-Men ‘97
The X-Men are now in the MCU! Kind of. This is an animated series that’s picking up the style and stories of the iconic ‘90s X-Men series. You can read much more about that at this link.
That’s not even all of what Marvel has in store on Disney+ for the next few years. Not discussed during the Disney+ day but still on the schedule are Loki season two, Don Cheadle in Armour Wars, and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, directed by James Gunn.
