Augmented Reality’s one of those terms that’s been rather over-used in recent years, but Layar, one of the first AR smartphone apps, remains a favourite.
I’m aware this is one of those apps that many Gizmodo readers will be familiar with, but it’s still not fair not to feature an app just because it’s established, especially when it’s as genuinely useful as layar can be. The concept is simple; use the camera and GPS functions of your Android phone in concert with layered overlays to present real-world information. Unlike rather more specific AR apps, the ability to drop in specific layers, whether you’re looking for a cinema or checking the weather gives Layar lots of functional utility. [Layar]
