Cops Act Wasted To Catch Gadget Thieves

Are you the type who likes to get blotto and ride public transport home late at night? Congratulations, you are a gadget thief’s favourite target! The New York Post reports that the NYPD is training a new squadron of drunk-impersonators to bust them.

Here’s the scenario: You suck down a few too many cocktails after work downtown and next thing you know, it’s closing time and you’re an hour on the train from wherever the hell in the stratosphere it is that you live. Must. Fight. Urge. To. Pass. Out. Zzzzzzzzzzzz… Of course you pass out, and when you wake up five stops past home, your iPhone, your tablet and your laptop is gone. How did they pry it from your hands?

The NYPD is training “dozens” of officers to pose as bait for the late night culprits who would filch your pricey gadget while you ride the train home at your most vulnerable. There has been a 16 per cent increase in train thefts this year, the result of more thieves going after smartphones and the like, according to the Post’s sources. Who knows if it’ll actually work, but if you want to save yourself a headache, don’t drink so much — or at least take a cab home. [NYPost]
