Everyone’s favourite is-it-on-again/is-it-off-again comedy is indeed coming back for another season. But not on another network — on Yahoo, who is following Netflix and Hulu’s leads with a cannonball into the original content waters.
After being recently cancelled by NBC, Community will be revived online for a 13-episode run available exclusively at Yahoo. In a statement, the show’s creator Dan Harmon seems very happy about the move:
“I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo. I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, Bang Bus!”
Community has some pretty good company, joining Yahoo’s other original series in development: the comedy Other Space by Paul Feig, the creator of Freaks and Geeks, and another named Sin City Saints, about a professional basketball team in Las Vegas.
The massive campaign mounted by Community’s fans to renew the show — #sixseasonsandamovie — might actually become a reality now. Star Joel McHale specifically referenced the campaign in his statement, after thanking Yahoo and Harmon. “And thank you to the greatest f%$#ing fans in the history of the human race,” he said. “It’s the internet. We can swear now.” [Variety]
