In the early hours of the morning, Samsung Unpacked kicked off and the phonemaker revealed all of its latest updates to its flagship ‘Galaxy S’ range with the Galaxy S24 devices, hosted right in Apple’s backyard of San Jose.
Let’s talk about everything that was announced at the event this morning.
The Samsung Galaxy S24 and S24+
Starting with the headlining devices, the Samsung Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24+, which have a similar form factor, though the S24+ is slightly bigger and has 12GB RAM (as opposed to 8GB) in all models. There hasn’t been a lot of changes on the hardware side this year for these devices, with dimensions changed ever so slightly and cameras staying approximately the same, however the displays received a small buff to be capable of 1-120hz. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra
The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is the most powerful device of the 2024 lineup, and has received the most changes. The chassis of the device is now made of titanium and the Telephoto lens has received an upgrade to 50MP (was 10MP on the Galaxy S23 Ultra). The display has been upgraded to Gorilla Glass Armor, and is now much flatter than its curved predecessor. Read all about the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra here.
Galaxy AI
This year, Samsung has focused a lot on AI, which we’ve written about in a separate article. The most impressive feature is the Galaxy S range’s ability to translate languages while you’re on the phone, so you can naturally have a conversation with somebody who doesn’t speak your language, or vice versa. Another highlight was the AI image editing tools, which allow you to completely edit out shadows or reflections in glass. There’s also the ability to summarise internet articles with AI, translate webpages, circle objects to search with Google Lens, and tone suggestions for messages and notes. The Samsung Galaxy Ring
To cap the event off, Samsung announced its latest gadget, the Galaxy Ring, a health-focused device with a similar use case as a smartwatch, albeit for your finger. What is Samsung Unpacked?
For those who don’t know, Samsung Unpacked is Samsung’s big showcase, where it typically debuts its latest flagship smartphones from the Galaxy S flagship series. Samsung typically hosts more than one every year, with the January event typically reserved for the ‘S’ devices, and later int he year events dedicated to foldables or other devices in the mobile category.
What was the Samsung Unpacked 2024 Date?
Samsung streamed the January Galaxy Unpacked event on its YouTube channel and on its website, with the event kicking off at 5am January 18 AEDT. We’re used to getting up early in the morning for these events, and we’ll be covering this event as it happens no less.
